Liz Burke Consulting is a results oriented consultancy company led by Liz Burke, a leader and manager with 30 years experience in higher education and local government libraries and 10 years in museums. Liz brings a breadth of knowledge and expertise to her consultancy work and is passionate about the central role of libraries, heritage and cultural organisations to their community. Liz has an open and consultative communication style and is focused on enabling her clients to thrive.
Liz’s tenure as Manager, Library and Museum Services at Grey District Council was marked by many accomplishments including significant increases in community engagement. At the Library the number of active borrowers more than doubled, the number of electronic items loaned tripled, and the number of virtual library visits increased 40-fold. A library that is effectively led can contribute to the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of the community. While the Museum building closed for earthquake strengthening, the collection continued to be available to the community through a series of Pop-up Museums with a schedule of exhibitions telling the District’s stories and co-curating with other collections of interest. A museum is a space where people discover, understand, learn, question, seek, and challenge. We create spaces for people to come together in new and engaging ways.
As Director, Library & Information Services at Murdoch University, Liz led the merged University Library and IT Departments comprising over 200 staff across three campus sites and an international presence in Singapore. Liz’s many roles also include Associate University Librarian at The University of Western Australia, responsible for the delivery of library services across nine subject libraries.
Actively engaged in multiple leadership roles and professional activities, Liz has served on the Kōtui Managers Executive Group, a year as Convenor; as a member of the Council of Australian University Librarians and the Council of Australian Directors of IT; on the Advisory Board of the Department of Information Studies at Curtin University; and a member of the Programme Committee for the EDUCAUSE Conference.
Liz earned a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Library & Information Services at RMIT; a Master of Information Management & Systems from Monash University; and a Bachelor of Letters with a major in Art History from The University of Melbourne.
Liz has Professional Registration from the Library & Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa, and is an alumna of the Aurora Leadership Foundation.
Liz Burke Consulting uses an associate model, bringing in specialised practitioners to complement Liz’s own expertise when needed, depending on the specific needs of each project.
